What Does The Artist Bring To The Clinical Landscape?
14 July 2018
A free arts and health seminar that reflects on The Heart of the Matter exhibition hosted at Centrespace, RWA and University of Bristol in association with Arts & Health South West.
The Heart of the Matter is an exhibition that brings together art and medicine to reflect on the human heart. Using the exhibition as a focus for discussion, this seminar will address important questions about the relationship between artists and clinicians in a medical context.
What does the artist bring to the clinical landscape? What steps or collaborations can be put in place to facilitate arts processes in a clinical context? How can clinical and research staff engage in this kind of work?
In the morning delegates will visit the exhibition at Centrespace Gallery and the RWA and then take part in a guided reflection on the work. The afternoon will involve a panel discussion at Beacon House, University of Bristol, adjacent to the RWA. There will be presentations from artist Sofie Layton, bioengineer Giovanni Biglino and health psychologist Jo Wray exploring the artistic processes and collaborative relationships behind the exhibition and the delicate work that takes place with patients and families in a clinical context to explore narratives of illness. Guest artist Deborah Padfield will present her work and experience in collaborating with clinicians, reflecting with the team on the wider issues of bringing artists into clinical contexts.
