Lewis Fry, View from Clifton Hill

Lewis Fry, View from Clifton Hill

Lewis Fry (1832-1921)

View from Clifton Hill

date unknown

oil on canvas

Fry was a Quaker, lawyer, philanthropist and a Liberal who lived and worked in Bristol, a city he knew well and cared about deeply. In this landscape Fry has captured the golden natural light of the sun from either a sunrise or a sunset. The bright light is perfectly contrasted by the darkness and the strong shapes of the trees facing away from the sunlight creating the shadows. This piece can also be used to remind us that there is no shadow without light, and that within both, peace can be found.
