Explore ways of animating the surface of a painting with homemade pastes, textural interventions and found materials based on acrylics. These techniques can be used to build both abstract and figurative/landscape images. With reference to modernist painters such as Burri, Dubuffet and Fautrier, also contemporary artists such as Blow, Kiefer and Tapies. You will explore the world of matter or 'matiere'. An illustrated talk will be included. You will be working on supports such as board and stretched canvas; if you wish to bring your own canvas (less than 50cm due to space limitations) please do.
All basic materials provided for this course (heavier weight papers available at cost price). Please bring your own painting brushes if you have them. Please bring an apron or wear clothes suitable for an art studio. You may wish to bring a plastic bag in which to take wet work home.
