This day school takes its inspiration from the season, looking at the macabre and frightening in the RWA Permanent Collection, Annual Open, and in collections around the world from the 18th - 20th century. 

Course Leader

Dr Hopkins is a freelance lecturer in Art History. Previously, she has lectured at the Victoria and Albert Museum; Bristol, London, Oxford and Cambridge Universities; the Tate, National and National Portrait Galleries; Sotheby's, Christies' and assorted independent institutions, and is a registered lecturer for NADFAS.

The Programme

  • The Gothick spirit of the 18th century: Blake and Fuseli to John Martin and Turner
  • Symbols, Seances and the Victorians: Leighton and Millais to Watts, Beardsley and Burne-Jones
  • GALLERY VISIT: Case studies from the Exhibition 
  • Lights of the Apocalypse: from Neo-Romanticism to Bacon, Frink and Freud
  • Fearie Tales: the eternal appeal of the macabre
